Research program on Wildland-urban-interface fires
Responsible: Eulàlia Planas, Elsa Pastor
- Mapping of vulnerable Infrastructures: We are generating global maps of the wildland-industrial interface and touristic infrastructures located in high-risk areas.
- Vulnerability Assessment Tool for properties at the WUI: Using fault-tree analysis, this tool provides a quantitative indicator of vulnerability, incorporating both the likelihood of a fire reaching a building’s exterior and the probability of fire entering the structure.
- Community-Scale vulnerability assessment methodologies: We have developed a framework with quantitative indicators to evaluate the vulnerability of WUI communities, considering key wildfire hazard components, WUI typology, emergency response capacity, and vulnerable elements within the community.
- Performance-Based design for buildings at the WUI: We have established a methodology for applying Performance-Based Design (PBD) to buildings in the WUI. This framework defines goals, objectives, performance criteria, and potential fire scenarios to ensure comprehensive fire safety.
