Hydrocarbon fires and cloud dispersion

 

The facility is located in the Security Training Center Can Padró” in San Vicenç de Castellet (Bages, Barcelona), thanks to an agreement between the mentioned center and UPC. It consists of two areas, one to make experimental pool fires, and the one for jet fires and clouds dispersion experiments

 

Hydrocarbon fires

 

We monitor mass loss rate, temperatures, flame geometry, heat fluxes and meteorological variables. We have a diverse range of sensors and measuring devices such as thermocouples, heat flux sensors, visible and infrared cameras and weather stations. These type of tests are used to develope semi-empirical models that describe fire dynamics and to study the predictive capacity of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation tools.

Cloud dispersion

 

We monitor flow and temperature fields, concentrations and meteorological variables. We have flowmeters, concentration sensors, ultrasonic anemometers, thermocouples and cameras to monitor the dispersion of gases. These tests allow us to study the dynamics of the concentration profile in toxic/flammable clouds and to study the predictive capacity of CFD simulation tools.
